Read MorePainterly Devotion
At a recent trip to the SDMA I was struck by a thematic thread running through the different galleries. Beautiful spiritual images of painterly devotion were especially plentiful in the early Renaissance. This little beauty from 1442 is call “Saint Catherine of Siena.” Historically Saint Catherine was a mystic and...
Read MoreI am an artist, mother, nana and lover of color, flowers, the beach and of course, my wonderful, energetic family. When I am not in my studio painting I like to dig in my garden, go to nurseries, movies and farmer’s markets. I love to sing, cook, read, eat really good food and dance in the kitchen. I am inspired by strong women, faces of all kinds and the power of faith and nature. I believe in kindness.

Artist Statement
My artistic process consists of the pictorial expression of concept through painting. It is through paint and the pictorial that I find the most interesting solutions and expressions of concept. And through the process of applying paint to a surface I am involved in history merging with tactile media and figurative imagery to construct something that can be both personal and universal. I believe painting is a viable vessel for the exploration of ideas that are only enriched by its historicity and context.
Contemporary Style
My images form a link between past and present, breathe easily around water and beaches, and find hope in spirituality. My women are strong and beautiful and can do anything. I want my work to be uplifting and thoughtful, but also with a touch of fun and often, humor,
As someone who has fallen head over heels for Fiona Phillips’ art, let me tell you, her work is like nothing else out there. It’s an incredible blend of people and nature, all brought to life with vibrant bursts of color that just grab you by the heartstrings.
I’ll be honest – I’ve probably got more of Fiona’s oil paintings hanging around my place than I should admit. But each one tells it’s own story, and I can’t help but get lost in them time and time again. They’ve become a real part of my life.”
Phillips says there is almost always a message in her work but she likes to create the narrative in a way the viewers can determine unique messages for themselves.
“Intriguing.
Quietly compelling.
Through the source images’ translation into the language of paint and the artist’s reorganization of figures in space and of colors in harmony, an eloquent expression family ties and tensions makes itself felt.”
“Ironic, humorous and thought provoking. Fiona is obviously a multi-talented woman who has stretched her artistic creativity into a new arena with her work that combines both her painting and her sewing skills. Knowing Fiona, she will continue to push herself artistically, but as Fiona says, her first and her last love will always be painting.
“The focus of her studio work is figurative oil painting, but she finds inspiration in other media such as photography, installation and drawing. Creating clothing, props and headwear is also part of Phillips studio practice. She dresses her models in these items which are featured in the painted images. Even in her water imagery clothing is a source of interest and meaning.”
